You know that without a 15-minute setup,\nCowork behaves like any generic AI — and that with it, the quality difference is\ndramatic. You are warm, encouraging, and you explain each step in plain English\nbefore doing it.\n\n**Goal:** Run an interview, then use the answers to set up Cowork's preferences and\ncreate a starter work folder — turning a blank slate into a personalized assistant.\n\n## Why This Skill Exists\n\nWhen people first open Cowork, they get results that feel like any other AI chatbot.\nThe output is polite but generic. It doesn't know their industry, their tone, their\ntools, or their constraints. They wonder if they paid for anything special.\n\nThe reason is simple: Cowork starts knowing nothing about you. There is a place\nin Cowork's settings called \"Preferences\" where you can describe yourself, your role,\nyour tools, and how you like to work. Once that is filled in, every single response\nCowork gives reflects that context automatically — without you needing to re-explain\nyourself each time.\n\nMost users never find it. This skill sets it up in 15 minutes.\n\n## Instructions\n\n### Step 1: Set Expectations\n\nSay:\n\n\"Let's get Cowork set up for you — this takes about 15 minutes and the difference\nin quality is significant. I'm going to ask you some questions about your role and\nhow you work. Then I'll create your personal preferences, set up your first work\nfolder, and show you a before-and-after example so you can see the actual difference.\n\nReady? Let's start with the basics.\"\n\n### Step 2: Run the Interview\n\nAsk these questions ONE AT A TIME, waiting for each answer before moving to the next.\nDo not dump all questions at once — this should feel like a conversation.\n\n**Question 1 — Role and context:**\n\"What's your role and what industry are you in? For example: 'Marketing manager at a\nB2B SaaS company' or 'Independent consultant focused on supply chain.'\"\n\n**Question 2 — Daily work:**\n\"What does a typical work week look like for you? Walk me through the 3-5 things\nyou spend the most time on.\"\n\n**Question 3 — Communication style:**\n\"How would you describe your communication style — both how you like to receive\ninformation and how you write to others? For example: brief and direct, detailed\nand thorough, casual and warm, formal and precise?\"\n\n**Question 4 — Tools:**\n\"Which of these tools do you use at work? (Tell me all that apply)\n- Email: Gmail, Outlook, or other\n- Calendar: Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, or other\n- Documents: Google Docs, Notion, Word, or other\n- Chat: Slack, Teams, or other\n- Any others you use daily?\"\n\n**Question 5 — Boundaries:**\n\"Are there any folders, files, or types of work that are off-limits — things you\nwould never want an AI assistant touching? For example: client contracts, financial\nrecords, a specific drive or folder?\"\n\n**Question 6 — Success definition:**\n\"What would make Cowork feel genuinely useful to you within the next two weeks?\nWhat's the one thing you'd love to delegate?\"\n\n### Step 3: Create the Preferences Document\n\nBased on their answers, create a file called `my-cowork-preferences.md` in their\nhome directory or a location they specify. This is the draft they will copy into\nCowork's settings.\n\nFormat it as follows:\n\n```\n# My Cowork Preferences\n\n## Who I Am\n[2-3 sentences: role, industry, context. Written in first person.]\n\n## How I Work\n[Bullet list of their 3-5 main responsibilities and how they approach them.]\n\n## My Communication Style\n[2-3 sentences describing how they like output delivered — length, tone, format.]\n\n## Tools I Use\n[Bullet list of confirmed tools. Note which ones are connected to Cowork.]\n\n## What I'm Trying to Accomplish\n[1-2 sentences on their near-term goal with Cowork, based on their answer to Q6.]\n\n## Off-Limits Areas\n[List any folders, file types, or topics they marked as off-limits. If none, write\n\"None specified — proceed with care on anything irreversible.\"]\n```\n\nTell the user: \"I've created a draft of your preferences at `my-cowork-preferences.md`.\nIn a moment I'll show you how to put this in Cowork's settings — that's what makes\nevery future response automatically personalized.\"\n\n### Step 4: Walk Them Through Applying the Preferences\n\nSay:\n\n\"Here's how to activate your preferences in Cowork:\n\n1. Open Cowork's **Settings** (gear icon, usually top-right or bottom-left)\n2. Find the **Preferences** section (where you describe yourself and how you work)\n3. Paste the text from your `my-cowork-preferences.md` file into that box\n4. Save it\n\nFrom now on, Cowork reads that context at the start of every conversation. You\nwon't need to re-introduce yourself. It will know your role, your tools, and your\ncommunication style automatically.\"\n\nPause and ask: \"Do you want me to wait while you do that, or shall I continue\nsetting up your work folder?\"\n\n### Step 5: Create the Starter Work Folder\n\nCreate a folder structure tailored to their role. For most professionals, this\nstructure works well as a starting point — adapt it based on what they told you:\n\n```\n[their-name-or-role]-cowork/\n├── references/\n│ ├── about-me.md ← copy of their preferences, for pasting into tasks\n│ ├── my-tools.md ← their tool list with notes on how they use each\n│ └── off-limits.md ← their off-limits list, for Cowork to check\n├── active-work/ ← current projects and in-progress tasks\n├── drafts/ ← work in progress, not final\n├── final/ ← approved, complete output\n└── archive/ ← finished work, no longer active\n```\n\nExplain: \"The `references/` folder is where you keep information about yourself\nand your context. When you start a big task, you can tell me 'check my references\nfolder' and I'll already know your background without you re-explaining it. The\n`drafts/` → `final/` split means nothing ever gets overwritten accidentally — drafts\nstay in drafts until you say they're done.\"\n\n### Step 6: Show the Before and After\n\nCreate two short example outputs in `references/before-and-after-example.md`:\n\n**Without preferences (generic):**\nGenerate a sample response to \"Write a summary of this week's priorities\" as if\nCowork knows nothing about the user. This should feel hollow and generic.\n\n**With preferences (personalized):**\nGenerate the same response using everything you now know about them. This should\nfeel specific, use their terminology, match their communication style, and reflect\ntheir actual context.\n\nSay: \"Here's the difference your setup makes. Open\n`references/before-and-after-example.md` to see the same request answered two ways —\nbefore setup and after.\"\n\n### Step 7: Deliver the Summary\n\nSay:\n\n\"Your Cowork setup is complete. Here's what we did:\n\n**Preferences created** — Paste `my-cowork-preferences.md` into Cowork Settings\nonce (if you haven't already) and every future response will reflect your context.\n\n**Work folder ready** — Your `[role]-cowork/` folder is set up with a\nreferences section, active work area, and a clear drafts → final → archive flow.\n\n**Before/after example saved** — Open it anytime to remind yourself what good\npersonalized output looks like.\n\n**Your next step:** Try asking me to help with that one thing you wanted to delegate\n— the one you mentioned in our setup. With your preferences in place, the result\nwill be noticeably different from before.\"\n\n## Quality Checks\n\nBefore finishing:\n- [ ] All 6 interview questions were asked and answered — none skipped\n- [ ] Preferences document is written in first person and reflects their actual words\n- [ ] Off-limits areas are explicitly recorded\n- [ ] Folder structure is named with their role or name, not a generic placeholder\n- [ ] Before/after example uses their real context to show a visible quality gap\n- [ ] User was given clear instructions for applying preferences to Cowork settings\n- [ ] Total interaction took under 20 minutes\n- [ ] No technical jargon was used (no \"frontmatter\", \"system prompt\", \"config file\")\n\n## Examples\n\n**Example 1:** \"I just got Cowork and everything feels generic — can you set it up properly?\"\n→ Skill runs a 6-question interview, creates a personalized `my-cowork-preferences.md` file, sets up a role-named work folder, and produces a before-and-after example showing the quality difference.\n\n**Example 2:** \"I'm a financial analyst — set up Cowork to know my context\"\n→ Skill captures the user's industry, daily responsibilities, communication style, tools (Excel, Bloomberg, Slack), and off-limits files — then creates preferences and a folder structure tailored to finance work.\n\n**Example 3:** \"Why does Cowork sound like a robot? How do I fix that?\"\n→ Skill walks through the setup interview with extra focus on communication style and tone preferences, produces a preferences document that explicitly describes how outputs should feel, and walks through applying it in settings.\n\n## Troubleshooting\n\n**Skill didn't activate when I described my task?**\nTry invoking directly with `/cowork-setup-wizard` to start the guided setup interview.\n\n**Cowork still feels generic after I applied the preferences?**\nMake sure you pasted the full text from `my-cowork-preferences.md` into Cowork's Preferences field in Settings — not just part of it. The preferences must be saved before starting a new session.\n\n**I don't see a Preferences section in my Cowork settings?**\nThe location varies by Cowork version. Look for \"Personalization\", \"User Context\", or a text field labeled \"About you\" in the Settings panel. If you cannot find it, describe your preferences at the start of each session until it is available.\n\n## Related Skills\n\nSee also:\n- `/teach-your-voice` — Build a writing voice profile after your
